I don’t have any idea…

what to title this entry. a catchy title eludes me at the moment.
surgery went well on monday, the doctor found a little piece of tissue caught in the hernia which was what was causing me so much pain. thankfully the pain is gone (with exception of residual incision pain), now it is mostly a matter of living within the lifting restrictions set on me by the Doc: 20 lbs max for three weeks (one down, two to go…). twenty pounds doesn’t seem like it would be that restricting, but when you consider that our little man now weighs 12 lbs 1 oz (officially on the scale at the doctor’s office for his one month check up on Friday the 16th) and his car seat weighs like 9 lbs, that leaves me feeling a bit stranded. i am not even supposed to shovel snow! (don’t tell the doc but dan let me do the patio and the front steps)
mom came down monday and stayed till Henry’s appointment on friday. it was a Huge help to have her around to help with the cooking, cleaning, and diaper duty. i have to say that mom went a little crazy cleaning, and I think it is now safe to eat off almost any surface in the house (thanks mom!)! and of course, dan really appreciated not having to come home and figure out dinner after work for his first full week back to work in a month. speaking of Dan’s work, things have picked up a bit, and he actually got like 3 hours of over time this past week – even with taking half of monday off to be with me in surgery! a good and bad thing. it looks like he will be going up to Traverse City for a day (maybe over-night, I hope not!) this week. a long way to go for work, but right now we take what we can get wherever we can get it.

For those of you who have Henry’s growth chart spread sheet going here are the stats from his one month check up:
Weight: 12 lbs, 1 oz
Length: 24 1/8 inches
Cranial circumference (head size for the rest of you): 15 1/2 inches
um, that would be “average” size for a 3 month old, according to the doctors chart. some of the 6 month clothes that we have already fit him, and most of the 0-3 month things no longer fit. dan says that baby sizing is as ridiculous as women’s sizing. i say it’s even worse.

Henry has been routinely sleeping 4.5-5 hours at a stretch during the night (and sometimes longer!) in his crib in his own room. we are Very thankful for this, and over all he’s a very content (tho very “contemplative” ie – grumpy looking) little man. one of our friends told us that “God lures you in with the first one”… well I would say we are in: hook, line and sinker… except getting spit-up and pooped on is kind of gross!
Our friend Stacy came by last week with her camera and a new lens to meet Henry Danger. photos can be seen (and ordered) at her Flickr page, or here:

He didn’t really appreciate being awakened from his nap for the paparazzi…

Surgery Scheduled for Monday

for what you might ask?

seems the Heeres trait of bad muscle fascia has reared its head again and i have an umbilical hernia. this is something that runs in my family. my grandad henry has had two hernias repaired, my dad two, my brother two, and my aunt two, and me one. and now i’m about to go in for a second repair. this is not a direct result of the pregnancy, but with the extra pressure on the inside, things got stretched and a bit of the “fatty layer” that’s supposed to be inside got pushed outside the fascia liner and now as things get back to their normal size and shape that bit is getting squeezed and is Very Uncomfortable. like especially when i pick up my now 12+ pound son and his little knees go into my belly button. makes me wince and get all teary eyed.

it started bothering me on monday, got more sore on tuesday, and by tuesday night i said “if it’s not better tomorrow i’m calling my doc”. well wednesday it was worse, and i saw the OB wednesday afternoon and she confirmed that it was a hernia, and ruled out the need for a run to ER by listening for bowel sounds and asking me a list of questions (i’ll spare you the details). then she made a phone call and got me in for a consult with a surgeon for thursday morning 8:30 – before normal business hours – and the surgeon confirmed that surgery would be necessary for the repair and left the timing up to me based on how uncomfortable i am… like we can do this “now” or we can wait until i’m more healed from the c-section. because i’m in a considerable amount of pain now and henry’s only going to get heavier and more demanding on my time, we decided that “now” is better.

but i’m not looking forward to it and it quite likely means that henry will get fed in some other fashion than that direct line of warm heavy whipping cream that i’ve been giving him his whole life. i’m pumping extra this weekend just in case.

your prayers are appreciated for the upcoming week of recovery. my mom is coming down to help for at least a few days, but i probably won’t be able to so much as lift him on to my belly the first night, let alone walk with him or manage changing a diaper or clothes.
